“Signal” – A Better Alternative for WhatsApp?

Do you feel perplexed due to WhatsApp’s recent privacy policy, and/or want another alternative for WhatsApp? Then just read along as we will be telling you all you need to know about another popular messaging app known as “Signal”.

There’s been an explosion in popularity of the encrypted messaging app lately. Here’s why.

  • Earlier this year, the World’s Richest Man (Elon Musk) tweeted that his followers should “Use Signal.”
  • Signal is a privacy-focused application (similar to WhatsApp) which adopts more security protocols than regular SMS text messaging.
  • Other messaging applications have risen in popularity and use as WhatsApp updated their privacy policy which its users believe will give its owner (Facebook) access to their data.

In one of Elon Musk’s characteristically straight-to-the-point tweets, He recently urged his followers to adopt Signal as their new messaging app by simply saying “Use Signal,” which is an encrypted messaging application applauded for taking security protocol further than similar messaging services.

Ever since WhatsApp, plans to introduce a new privacy policy which some users think will fork over their data to the application’s parent company, Facebook, an alternative service like Signal seems like the best solution to that.

Signal’s popularity has increased massively since 2020’s summer, as protesters in support of the Black Lives Matter movement utilized the application, which enabled them keep their messages safe from police officers that could be monitoring their correspondences and location potentially. Reports in The New York Times stipulated that, the app saw five times more downloads in the first week of June 2020 as compared to the week prior to the police killing of George Floyd.

Elon Musk’s tweet clearly boosted the turnout of the app’s popularity. In a January 13th tweet, Signal said the application had elevated from 10 million installs on the Google Play market to 50 million downloads in the span of a single day.
